We present an extension of N =8 supergravity in which the natural symmetry group SO(8) is gauged. Local SO(8) invariance is shown to be consistent with the dynamically realized SU(8) symmetry. We mention possible implications of this result for superunification. ADS Classic is now deprecated. It will be completely retired in October Please redirect your searches to the new ADS modern form or the classic info can be found on our blog.

: Superspace and Supergravity: Proceedings of the Nuffield Workshop, Cambridge June J 8vo ( x mm). Publisher's maroon cloth, lettered in silver on spine, original pictorial : $ The complete structure of N = 8 supergravity is presented with an optional local SO(8) invariance. The SO(8) gauge interactions break E 7 invariance, but leave the local SU(8) unaffected. Exploiting E 7 × SU(8) invariance and using explicit lowest order results, we first derive the complete action and transformation laws.

Supergravity is notoriously complex and difficult to tackle through the original literature. This book makes it far easier, but still not easy by any means. The focus is on D=4, N=1,2, although there is also a nice chapter on D=11, and a less useful survey of other dimensions/5(12).

About the author () Stephen William Hawking was born on January 8, in Oxford, England. As a student at Oxford University, Hawking studied Physics, and after three years was awarded a first class honors degree in Natural Science.

Although there are many books on string theory, this is the first-ever authoritative and systematic account of supergravity. The coincidence between the book's virus and the actual coronavirus outbreak is uncanny. Supergravity is a supersymmetric theory of gravity, or a theory of local supersymmetry. It involves the graviton described by Einstein gravity (general relativity), and extra matter, in particular a fermionic partner of the graviton called the Size: KB.

In theoretical physics, supergravity (supergravity theory; SUGRA for short) is a modern field theory that combines the principles of supersymmetry and general relativity; in contrast to non-gravitational supersymmetric theories such as the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. This widely acclaimed introduction to N = 1 supersymmetry and supergravity is aimed at readers familiar with relativistic quantum field theory who wish to learn about the supersymmetry algebra.

In this new volume Supersymmetry and Supergravity has been greatly expanded to include a detailed derivation of the most general coupling of super-symmetric gauge theory to supergravity.5/5(1). Hawking, M. Rocek. The author is a world expert on supersymmetry and supergravity phenomenology, who has contributed to the field with many original and outstanding works.

'This book provides a clear, pedagogical and thorough treatment of supersymmetry, supergravity and applications in the context of cturer: Cambridge University Press. "Supergravity, together with string theory, is one of the most significant developments in theoretical physics.

Although there are many books on string theory, this is the first-ever authoritative and systematic account of supergravity. Written by two ofthe most respected workers in the field, it provides a solid introduction to the fundamentals of supergravity. The three architects of supergravity are getting some high-profile recognition, more than four decades after they developed the influential theory.

Sergio Ferrara, Daniel Freedman and Peter van Nieuwenhuizen will receive a $3 million Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. Book Description.

A unified theory embracing all physical phenomena is a major goal of theoretical physics. In the early s, many physicists looked to eleven-dimensional supergravity in the hope that it might provide that elusive superunified theory.

Abstract: These lectures present an introduction to supergravity, and are intended for graduate students with a working knowledge of quantum field theory, including the elementary group theory needed for it, but no prior knowledge of general relativity, supersymmetry or string theory is assumed.
